DAY 1 : Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre - SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE   unique-lodge

You'll be greeted upon your arrival at Sandakan Airport by our friendly Guide and Captains. Get acquainted before we make our way to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre where you'll learn about the plight of the Orang Utan and see firsthand the conservation efforts. We proceed to watch a video show about the plight of the Orang Utans and the rehabilitation efforts ongoing at the Centre. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalks to witness the feeding of the orang utans at 1000hrs then we continue to the newly completed enclosed nursery area for young orang utans. If the Orang Utans are feeling particularly friendly, you may even get the chance to get up close to the Orang Utan so be sure to hang onto your belongings. Thereafter visit the Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about conservation of the world's smallest bear.

After lunch, we head to the Sandakan jetty where we'll embark on a Borneo Eco Tours speedboat for a 2.5 hours boat journey up the Kinabatangan River to the multi awards winning Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Don't worry as the ride is not choppy and it won't be just boat ride as there will be opportunities along the way to view wildlife and birds, and if you're lucky, even the shy Bornean Pygmy Elephants. Cool down with a refreshing drink and cold towel upon arrival while our friendly manager helps you check-in. Take a few moments to savor afternoon tea before we head out into the wild on your first river safari.

Every boat is equipped with eco friendly outboard engines (used along the main river where the current is strong) and electric motor (used during wildlife viewing in the small tributaries) in search of wildlife and birds. Take loads of photographs as the wildlife extravaganza puts on a show. Return for a solar heated hot shower after sunset before enjoying a candle light buffet dinner overlooking the mighty river. Be sure to try on our in-house Sarongs (local wear) which is cooling and helps keep away any mozzies. Dinner is followed by your complimentary night cruise tour. Be amazed as you get up close to sleeping birds and animals and enjoy the magical star studded night sky, all from the comfort of your boat. Stay overnight at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (Lunch & Dinner)

Should it rain on the night of Day 1, your night cruise will be conducted on the evening of Day 2. The complimentary night cruise is not exchangable nor refundable. In the event the night cruise cannot be conducted on all 3 nights, a suitable replacement will be offered.

Please make sure that you travel light to Sukau Rainforest Lodge

DAY 2 : SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE

An early morning call at 0530hrs to catch the rainforest waking up is in store. If conditions are just right, you might even wake to a surreal heavenly experience shrouded in mists. After a light breakfast, we embark on a morning river cruise in search of waking wildlife and birds which are most active in the morning on our way to the Kelenanap Ox-Bow lake. Return to a full breakfast awaiting you, taking the time to just immerse yourself in the surroundings.

After breakfast, proceed for an educational walking tour along the lodge's Hornbill Boardwalk with our in-house naturalist after which you'll have some time to relax. If you're itching for more activity, we have many optional activities on offer like a pampering Foot Spa treatment, Batik Painting for the family, our soon to be completed Dip Pool and various other leisure activities. There is also a different free activity everyday so be sure to ask us. After afternoon tea, we head out onto the river once again in search of more wildlife. Breathe in the rainforest and capture the moments as we return at sunset from our final river cruise. Candlelight dinner and overnight at Sukau Rainforest Lodge. (Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

DAY 3 : SUKAU RAINFOREST LODGE - Gomantong Caves

We take an early morning river cruise along the Menanggol River by silent electric motor in search of wildlife, waking to the cacophony of the rainforest before returning for a full breakfast. We have time to relax or enjoy one of our optional activities. After lunch, we make a 27 km overland journey to the Gomantong Cave. The cave is surrounded by primary rainforest, rich in fruiting wild figs which makes it an ideal place to spot Orang Utans in the wild. We'll spend our time exploring the cave and its surroundings until sunset, when you'll be overwhelmed by the exodus of over two million bats heading out for the night, swiftlets coming in to nest as well as raptors (eagles) swooping in and preying on the bats. Return to Sukau Rainforest Lodge for overnight stay.(Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

Experience profound relaxation and comfort at Halia Spa, Sukau Rainforest Lodge, as we provide an 'escape from the ordinary' by offering you a blend of both traditional and modern Spa treatments. Enjoy special deals when you book online!

(Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner)

DAY 5 : DANUM VALLEY

An early morning birdwalk is followed by breakfast. Spend the whole day exploring the forest for birds and mammals, leading up to an escarpment with ancient burial coffins. We had such a wonderful time at Sukau, and so appreciated your knowledge and care of us. I was very sad to leave. Danum Valley was very luxurious, and we saw all sorts of birds (including a Bornean Bristlehead), but it didn't have the welcoming atmosphere of Sukau! The guides at Danum Valley weren't as knowledgeable as at Sukau - they aren't Rangers - the rangers are at the Field Centre. They were good, but not as good as your team!

Did a 15 day tour of Sarawak and Sabah and in every detail Eco tours were tantastic. Great drivers and guides for whom nothing was too much trouble. Wonderful hotels, all centrally located, and great food everywhere we went. Special mention to Sheila in KK whose knowledge and enthusiasm were astounding. From first email to last drop off a truely wondertul experience. Thank you

Borneo Eco Tours is professional, knowledgeable, and they want their customers to have an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Everything from arranging the tour online to being dropped off at my hotel after the tour went smoothly. I went on their Kinabatangan Wildlife tour and saw wild orangutans, pygmy elephants, monkeys, various birds, and crocodiles. The Sukau Rainforest Lodge exceeded my expectations. It is clean and has, really, whatever you need right in the middle of the jungle. I also went on their Selingan Island tour to see the turtles. My guide, Fernando, was dedicated and knowledgeable. Both tours were memorable experiences and well worth the money and time. I strongly encourage anyone and everyone to seek Borneo Eco Tours as your travel company while you are in Sabah, Borneo.

Everything was covered from the airport pick-up, hotels, transfers, jungle trips...perfect. Guides and drivers were charming and spoke excellent English. The whole weeks' trip was hassle free and we enjoyed every minute of it, many thanks... a trip of a lifetime. Worth every penny, thank you.

eyequackess, United Kingdom, January 2016

The lodge was fantastic. The staff were all very good. The most outstanding was Fernando - our guide, and his commitment to us as his customers.

David Hughes, Australia, 13-15 January 2015

Happy new year.

Thanks for your mail. I came back to Japan yesterday and I and my family really enjoyed staying at your lodge. Especially food and staff were very nice and I would like to go back again in future if I have a chance. Thanks for everything and I wish you all the best for this year!

Satomi Nakahara, Japan, 1 - 3 January 2015

I am impressed with the guide's knowledge especially Hamid. Sukau Rainforest Lodg and the excurison, is a beautiful place in really good order, well organised.

Evalena Nilsson, Sweden, 20 Dec 2014-1 Jan 2015

I am most impressed about the efficiency of Borneo Eco Tours's staffs. The guides are always on time, everything handled smoothly and to plan. Documnetation faultless. The vehicles are spotlessly clean! And obviously well maintained (including the boats). And on top of that, Sukau Rainforest Lodge is FANTASTIC! Such welcoming staff, great rooms and location plus eco credentials.

Melinda Michael, Australia, 24 Dec 2014 - 4 Jan 2015

I am not sure who is the boss in your company, but please tell them, we did so enjoy our time at the Kinabatangan. Your company does things the right way, so people can enjoy their trip. The Sukau Rainforest Lodge is a happy place, and the people,  beds, setting and food were lovely. Hazwan was an excellent guide, and we saw lots of wildlife that he pointed out.

I shall be writing a letter to the biggest weekend travel article paper in this country, so if it is published, I shall send you a copy. This is because it is safe to travel to Sandakan, and east Sabah, though the government has a travel warning. Last time my article was published, so we will cross fingers and see.

Have a good week, bye for now, from Leola Gilliland.

Leola Dianne Gilliland, Australia, 12 - 14 December 2014

Exciting boat journey to resort. Good first impression of lodge and very impressed with standard of accomodation. All staff are very welcoming and friendly, food is very good (especially soups!). Afternoon boat trip was amazing. Then early morning trip was sublime (best trip of all). Great second afternoon trip and unbelieveable night trip (How does the guide see the animals?). Our guide Fernando (Alonso) was knowlegeable, friendly, entertaining. It was practically perfect. I t was the sheer joy of being on the river, seeing the tropical forest and the wildlife, that was really the thing that will remain in my memory.

Announcement: Good News! We are proud to announce that all 20 rooms of Sukau Rainforest Lodge are now equipped with energy saving inverter air-conditioners at no extra charge. Unfortunately, due to inadequate supply of electricity from the grid, the air-conds will be operational during the day from 10:30am. Previously, due to inadequate electricity supply from the grid, the air-conds were only operative until 4.30pm but has now been extended until 12.00 midnight. We are still in the works of upgrading our generators to be able to offer 24hrs continuous air-conds by March 2016.

Built in 1995 in traditional Malaysian architecture using several Borneo hardwood species, it went through a major RM2 million renovation in 2010. It is built on stilts with a bar lounge, gift shop, plunge pool, Gomantong Hall meeting place, education centre, Hornbill Boardwalk with two elephant passes, three open decks for wildlife viewing, an enclosed garden, a riverside Melapi restaurant, open sun-deck, river jetty. Commencing in 2016, an expansion and upgrading of facilities located some distance away is being undertaken that won't be disruptive to our present guests. All rooms have attached bathroom and shower water is supplied through rainwater harvesting and hot water by solar heaters. Air is cooled by cross ventilation air currents, ceiling fan and since July 2016 energy saving inverter air-conditioning. Lighting is supplemented by oil lamps using recycled cooking oil.
