Just returned from a most amazing trip with Borneo eco tours. Would highly recommend! So well organised in a very relaxed way. We did thirteen Island and then 3 nights in Sukau Rainforest Lodge. Just amazing, was way better than our expectations. Need to make a special mention to our tour guide Jamaidi ( Jamanji ) he was so enthusiastic and knowledgable, very lovely guide. We were sorry to be leaving. I would not hesitate to whole heartedly recommend this tour company. It was just an awesome trip from the first enquiry to being dropped back at the airport.
We had a VERY short window in Borneo - literally a few hours and we really wanted to see Sepilok Orangutan Centre. Raymond picked us up from the airport around 8AM. He was such a great tour guide with perfect english and very funny guy! We had the best time ever and he taught us a lot about the Orangs. We also went to SunBear centre across the road. Really good experience. Then we were dropped back at the airport for our 2.30pm flight. Thank you Raymond and everybody at Borneo Eco Tours for our amazing trip.
What an incredible journey this was! Everything including the environment, guides, service, ambiance, etc. etc. was the best! I have taken plenty of wildlife trips all over the world and am happy to say that our guide Hamit was absolutely the best. His knowledge, his knack of finding and spotting all kinds of mammals, birds and reptiles was uncanny. In our 4 days in Borneo (Sukau and Sepilok) we saw everything I wanted to see except the Bristlehead. If I could give this more than 5 stars, I would. Thank you for giving us a lifetime of memories.
I agree with all of the 'average' reviews and the critical focus on accommodation and food, but the wildlife and our lovely lovely guides means it's a 4* (very good) from me.
The river transfer is great fun, however on the way our driver hit a log and broke the engine so we had no way of getting to the Lodge. It was clear there was no back up plan. We hopped onto another passing transfer (but don't know what we would have done if we had been on the last rather than lead boat) There were no radios and they were calling each other on phones that didn't always work/pick up. We were lucky. Half our boat had to wait in a tropical downpour to be rescued a couple of hours later. I feel in the middle of the Borneo rainforest there needs to be a backup plan or the drivers need to be more careful.
On arrival, our room was great. It was a new villa with large bathroom, hot water and plugs. No wifi. A wardrobe rail but no coat hangers, no safe, no fridge and no toiletries so it didn't quite hit the mark after first impressions and given how much we had paid, I would have expected complimentary shampoo etc in a room like this (refillables are fine to keep waste down) which was alarming as I didn't bring any. Twin beds were pushed together and as uncomfortably hard (for me) as any I have ever slept in.
Our guides were the best! Fernando was without doubt the stand out part of our trip. Knowledgeable, enthusiastic and friendly he worked hard to show us wildlife. And on the last day Noah and his eagle eyes stepped capably into his shoes to look after us. I really liked the ethos of bringing and refilling your bottles. As well as the additional efforts to organise trips, talks, walks and fill your travel days in Sandakan with activities.
I wish the pool had been a bit bigger. The pool is tiny. Really very small - think plunge pool. And it can't cope when the lodge is full (which it was). It was a shame because we were there for a bit and it would have been nice to lay by the pool in between cruises. There's not an enormous amount to do otherwise.
The food is terribly dreary. Personally, I didn't like the pressure that meant that as soon as a meal was served (the gong tolled!) people ran to get there - partly because it ran out. Dinner occasionally perked up.
The breakfast is spectacularly boring. Things ran out and weren't replaced. It feels lazy and at odds with with our room. If you can make rice for dinner you can make nasi lemak for breakfast and if you can do omelette you can do roti canai. You also need to not run out of food. I also don't buy the middle of the jungle line - because it isn't. And it's the easiest serve in the business. You know exactly how many covers and the exact hour people will be eating a self-serve buffet.
Largely food ran the gamut between tepid and cold. And always greasy.
The FB Manager is grumpy and got huffy if you asked for more coffee ("there's always coffee- well there's not, or getting shouted at for using the wrong cutlery when the designated stuff had run out), which is a problem when service is not running smoothly, which it rarely did. I think we were all a bit scared of him by the end.....
Overall I think it has ambitions for a 4* (new rooms which are very swish) but it isn't delivering and can't quite decide what it wants to be; a research centre or a safari lodge. There's massive potential to bring together accommodation and experience into an incredible package but it's not there yet.
Bearing in mind the whole cost of the trip, the accommodation and hospitality was more inconsistent than it should be, and really quite average. However, the boat trips, the guides and the wildlife were absolutely wonderful. I would go for them alone.
If you have got this far - you have probably already reserved - Well done!!
I made all the inquiries directly and found the communication with Cindy at Borneo Eco Tours excellent. We stayed 3 nights at the lodge (most people cram it into two days, which seems doable). Collected at Sandakan Airport and from that moment on, we sat back and enjoyed the ride. Our guide was awesome, spotting Viper snakes in the rainforest and hard to find Orangutans. We saw the big 5 in the first day and on the second and third (we were lucky). The lodge offers buffet food for breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food quality is really good and tasty.
A typical day - early morning cruise, breakfast - down time (option to walk along the rainforest floor canopy), lunch, Orangutan talk, tea/afternoon cruise/bat exodus, dinner, evening cruise, bedtime.
We stayed in a family room with our 12 year old son. We reached the river lodge by boat from Sandakan. The room was fairly small but quite adequate. The bathroom area was fairly big. The aircon worked well. The food was good but they did run out of some things if you weren’t quick! They did replenish it but it took some time. We were lucky to see the resident orangutans, Lucky & Day. We also saw the rest of the big 5 on our boat trips. There is a pool but there weren’t enough sunbeds or towels when we were there. Be warned that there were a lot of mozzies around and they loved me! Overall we had a great stay and loved wearing our sarongs at dinner (see photo)!
Our two day stay here was quite an experience. Marty, the guide who accompanied us on all our river cruises was excellent, very knowledgeable and very patient too! In fact all the staff were helpful and attentive. We didn't get to see Pygmy elephants or any crordiles but this did not detract from our enjoyment in any way. We stayed in one of the original standard rooms which was ok but quite dark and had no view to speak of. However they are in the process of building new chalet type accommodation which looks lovely. Some of them are already in use. The food was plentiful and quite tasty.
We had the experience of a lifetime. We saw the Big 5 of Borneo, Pygmy Elephants, Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, Crocodiles and Rhinoceros Hornbills.Up at 5am everyday for boat tours, boat tours in the evening and additional activities. We stayed in one of the new villas. It's not 5 star more 3.5 star but it was clean, spacious, good shower and good air con. We weren't there for the accommodation! The food is ok and the staff are wonderful. Happy and can't do enough for you. But what really made this experience was our guide Hamit. What a lovely, funny, intelligent and informative man. He really enjoys his job and it shows. He went above and beyond to make sure our stay was the best. He is an absolute credit to the Lodge. If you get the chance, BOOK IT! You won't regret it.
Our lodge was far more luxurious than I expected. The staff were super friendly and helpful. Tours and activities were fantastic and all the tour guides were excellent- and went the extra Mir to make sure you enjoyed the tours- especially Nexter!! We saw all big 5 animals and many many more. Cannot recommend this lodge enough. Food is so-so but you don't go for the cuisine!
Sukau Rainforest is a nice place in the middle of the jungle. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The tours/cruises and tourguides are fantastic with lots of wildlife around! Rooms are good but a little noisy. The WiFi is an issue, they have a daily limit on data resulting in no internet if another customer has been on Youtube in the morning... They should fix this by providing a datalimit per customer instead of a joint datalimit.
We stayed here as part of our honeymoon trip. Our room was adequate but a little on the dark side and no view at all out of the window unfortunately. They are building new lodges though which look superb. The best part about this place though are the guides and river cruises. It's simply amazing. Marty our main guide was exceptional. As was Steven who was with us for the first cruise. How they can spot a tiny kingfisher at night from a distance I will never know! Marty made sure we saw everything possible - the top 5 were all ticked! He was very knowledgable and a genuinely nice guy. The food here is very good and plentiful.
We spent 4 days at this wonderful lodge The accommodation was excellent and the food was great. The fantastic excursions up and down the river with exceptional guides was all we could ask for + more. A fantastic experience for all ages.
An experience that will stay with us for life. We stayed for a few days at the Sukau lodge, and enjoyed a variety of the tours and excursions on offer. Amongst the group of welcoming local guides we were lucky to have the benefit of Steven's deep knowledge of the forest. I heard a handclap in the street yesterday and was transported back to the story Steven told of communicating between members of his tribe...
i have to admit that when i first found out there would be no mobile reception and TV i was worried on how to keep a 2 and 6 year old entertained! but i decided that i needed to breakaway from that connectivity and reconnect without these technology devices. upon reaching the area, we crossed a suspension / hanging bridge. the kids found that amusing. then when they descended from the bridge, they ran around like wild chickens. when we approached the fig tree i was actually impressed how compact yet complete it was. we decided to do half and half for food - cook and also enjoy the local dishes which could be ordered. we went to the river for a dip, fed the fish in the pond, played with the local musical instruments, did a slight trek in vain to find a buffalo (don't make promises you can't keep to kids - so i learnt). we found the village buffaloes bathing in mud and owh gosh the kids were ecstatic. at night, we had an early dinner. Helenna (who prepared our food) and Aryl (our guide) stayed on to play and chat with us and the kids. by 9pm, we called it a night. the area is so calming and it really did give me a sense of peace. would i return? yes. how would i vacay there again?with friends! Imagine having a private space all to yourself and friends, BBQing and just enjoying the night. Now there are only 2 rooms, but you can camps comfortable in the shaded area. I would also have done Quad Biking but didn't have enough time for that.
breakaway and get away.
here at the kiulu farmstay
Did the quad biking a few days ago and what an experience. We were picked up from KK and onto the quad biking. Safety briefing was thorough and the practice was fun. I tried a semi automatic and it was easy to master. All the relevant hills and drops were covered correctly. We were even allowed to have a blast too as long as you were safe.
We were looking for something to do to fill in our last half day before we flew out - really glad we found these guys. Extremely reasonably priced, scenic drive out there and really amazing country for a ride. No technical riding, which gives you a great chance to look at the amazing country you're in. Friendly, helpful staff from start to finish - a great end to a fantastic holiday.
Borneo Eco Tours Are Fantastic!
Borneo Eco Tours are fantastic. Highly recommended! Our tour consultant Oviera was extremely helpful, offered advice tailored to our needs, and ensured no detail was overlooked. All guides were friendly and knowledgable. More importantly, they are all passionate about sustainable tourism, which is great to see. Special shout out to Eryanto, our guide for 3 days - an absolute champ. Thanks to him, we spotted all the big 5, and had a great time in Borneo.
We just got bumped. We were booking late notice (12 days before tour departure) and had to chase the confirmation. I explained: no problem if you cant take us on a tour, but just let us know so that we can find somewhere else. Staff kept us hanging on. Eventually we got the confirmation! Now, on the day of departure to Malaysia (5 days after booking through the site) we got an email informing us that after double checking we cant go. Do you have different dates? Not even a sorry. I'd explained we had a tight time slot. This could seriously ruin someones holiday, so make sure you follow-up with them and book far in advance.
We had a fabulous trip in Borneo. Borneo Eco Tours arranged our trip to climb Mt Kinabalu and our jungle lodge for 3 days. Our guides in Sandakan were great as well as our guide in the jungle and on the mountain. All transport was on time and moved quickly, bags transferred easily and communication was easy. We only wish we could have continued to explore more of Borneo and what Eco Tours had to offer.
Excellent, Well Organised, Friendly & Helpful!
Excellent holiday planning. Well organised, friendly and helpful and we got to see lots of nature in Mulu and Sukau.
Great tour so efficient and our tour guide was amazing and very informative. We would definitely use these guys again and wish we were in Borneo for longer and were able to do more tours.

Amazing Company, The Guides Are Extremely Knowledgeable & Friendly!
Borneo eco tours is an amazing company. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They are passionate about animals and conobservation. I did the 4 day 3 night wild life tour and was pleasantly amazed with what i saw and in information provided. I had Levi as my guide on turtle island who answered all questions and gave me a great understanding of the turtles and a bit if Borneo history. I was on one of the boats that they had an issue with but due to great professionalism was rectified quickly. I was then lead by Jamanji at the rainforest lodge. Very knowledgeable and personable guy. Once again he was passionate about making sure all aspects of the trip went smoothly and guests saw as much wildlife as possible.
All in all an amazing trip i would recommend to anyone traveling to Borneo. Wonderful place with wonderful people.

Friendly Staff & Great Rooms
Located on the river. Food court adapted "on the edge of" the river. Calm and relaxed atmosphere. Friendly staff and great rooms.
Amazing & Great Experince!
Did this a week ago with Joe and Mr Sideon, amazing guys and a great experience. We both loved it, 2 hours of ATV driving and professional as well. There were 4 of us in total and lots of time explaining the route, safety.
Well Done & Thank You!
I have just spoken to Janet Stone and they had such a fabulous time and thought you would like to know. They were particularly impressed with their guide at Sukau, she couldn’t remember his name when I spoke but she had noted it somewhere. She said they wanted to keep in touch with him and he had written something about his Facebook page being his village name? Anyway, she said he was an amazing guide so well done. They also mentioned about how fantastic the staff at Borneo Rainforest Lodge were and in particular the guide Adrian and the butler Daniel. So well done to them and thank you to the lodge for their upgrade and to you Nelly for requesting the private lunch by the river if you did or to them if they did? Anyway, very happy clients! They also saw a whole herd of pygmy elephant when they didn’t think they would as they were told they had moved on. Well done!

The best tour operator in Sabah. Proffesional guides and practices green policy.
We travelled as a family with 2 children. Easy to do so. The organisation with oviera was perfect. The people in the sukau rainforest resort are really friendly and helpful. The guides were all great, with good knowledge of fauna and flora. It was a nice experience, just a few remarks. Borneo eco tours always talks about the importance of ecological thinking but when we were having a really great tour outside, our bus parked on the parking lodge was running because of the air condition for the driver. This is not ecological thinking. And on the different kind of tours in the river they never used the electrical motor, although it was written everywhere, always running with the gasoline motor. And it was written that when you go on a night tour, you get a cd with 214 pictures. When i asked for these after the tour, they just told me that was just a promotion a long time ago....so please update your things.
Amazing place. Been so lucky with our wildlife sightings. Fantastic foot massage and lovely food.
Facility, staff and tours are all excellent. For myself it could be a bit more active... But it's understandably not as a chunk of the people attending the tours are older.
We had the plesure to stay 3 nigths at Sukau. Such an amazing place. We loved the smiling staff, the river cruises and the very beautiful new villa nr 10. We even loved the Barking Gecko that lived outside and inside our villa, and barked at us both night and day?
I went there with my husband and 2 year old boy, for 3 nights, and it was fantastic. We can not recommend this place enough, and can't wait to come back. Thank you for all, especially finding our sons car in the river, after he dropped it. Thank you♥
If you want to get away from it all then this is the place for you. I loved my stay at Kiulu and my host Saidin did everything possible to make me feel welcome. The food was delicious and authentic and I really enjoyed the village tour. Thank you Saidin for playing the gongs as I walked across the bridge into the farm stay :) Make sure you include this little hidden piece of paradise on your travels in Sabah.
We stayed for two nights as part of a 3 day/2 night tour with Borneo Eco Tours. I've reviewed the services provided by Borneo Eco Tours separately as i'd rate them as 5* whereas the Lodge is only getting 4*.
Given it's a long way from anywhere the lodge is very well put together and run. We were in a standard room (not a villa) which provided two twin beds. The rooms are arranged with the bedroom as you walk in and then you go through to the bathroom area which also has a sofa area (alongside the sink with the toilet and shower in a separated bit) and has a glass window onto the forest. There is aircon and a ceiling fan.
The rooms are basic but comfortable and you are provided with tea and coffee making facilities. There is a drinking water jug you can refill from various dispensers. There is no hot water in the sink. The shower hot water is provided by solar so you get one tank of hot water per day. In other words, have too long a shower in the evening and you may not have hot water in the morning.
Meals are on a lovely balcony overlooking the river which they are extending to apparently provide a new bar (currently in the centre of the Lodge). All meals are buffet style (included in the tour package). Breakfast has an egg station for omelettes and a toaster. Food was good with western and local options.
Please note that the bar is expensive even by Malaysian standards (which is not unreasonable given the distance they have to cart it).
Staff all very friendly. Tours, as i mentioned in the Borneo Eco Tours review, were excellent with very knowledgeable guides, etc. All boats in good repair with life jackets, etc. There is a broad walk at the rear of the hotel out into the rain forest itself where members of our group saw a mouse deer.
So why not 5*?
Firstly, there are a number small little things which could be addressed by training. For example, proactive buffet management. There appears to be no-one monitoring the buffet supplies and making sure that popular dishes are refilled before they run out. They do refill - eventually. It's a fair distance to the kitchen. Another example is the bar. Ordering a beer does not result in the delivery of a beer until after reams of paperwork have been completed and you've signed in blood, etc. Just get us the beer and then do the <deleted> paperwork people.
Secondly, even on the day you are not on the dawn safari (wake up knock is at 5:30am), you will be awake as half the residents are on the dawn safari and sound proofing is not a factor in the design. You can hear people in adjacent rooms, people walking up and down the room access walkway, etc. In fact on the day we had our lie in it was very noisy from 5:30 for about an hour.
Also, in case management read this, my top tip to be more eco friendly: The housekeeping staff leave the aircon on and the rear glass windows open so they are, in effect, trying to cool the whole rain forest. At least they should close the sliding door between the bedroom and the sink/seating/toilet area to prevent their cool air flowing straight into the jungle.
Finally, do yourself a favour. Take the 2.5 hour boat ride in rather than the land route. It's more expensive but well worth it.
I'd certainly recommend a stay here. My quibbles are just that, quibbles and, on the whole, it's a great place, well run and highly recommended.
great people, food is good, tours are great with guides that are both passionate and well skilled at there job.
Every thing was good really, only point is that this is 2017 and we need to be connected, the wifi is terrible
small point we had families with young children on both sides which is not good as you can't get to sleep, maybe the families should all be put together?
Sukau Rainforest Lodge is a great place for picturesque riverine landscape and wildlife, with excellent hospitality! Dining at the Melapi Jetty was wonderful, with beautiful Kinabatangan river view. Also a good spot to observe a riverine sunset. The lodge is well-managed. Some construction is on-going when we were there, but when this is over, the place is superb!
We had a lovely stay at Sukau. The staff were fantastic and the food very good. Sue is an amazing asset to the lodge - always running around seeing to guests needs. They baked a wonderful cake for my daughters birthday which was lovely. The new villas we stayed in were beautiful even though at the beginning we had no water (and we were desperate for a shower) & twin beds instead of a king bed. All sorted out quickly & gracefully - thank you Raynauld. The adverts say the new villas have wifi but this hasn't been installed as yet. Not a problem for us as it was good to escape the internet for a few days. We saw a huge herd of elephants and also proboscis monkeys, other monkeys, crocodiles & birds. Sadly the orangutan was hiding in the tree & we only caught a shadow. We enjoyed the boat safaris along the river. All together a very memorable stay in a beautiful location.
We absolutely loved our time at the river. The staff were very friendly and went out of their way to help. The river trips were well organised and good fun. The food was lovely and they offered afternoon tea also. We definitely recommend staying here! We will if we came back!
Marty & Joelle (sorry if i spelt your name wrong) are amazing guides! They really made our trip special, very knowledgable and courteous. They did everything they could to make our day unforgettable.
Our Villa (V2) was simply lovely. Great shower and bathroom with twin beds which looked great but were slightly hard, we were not the only guests who thought this.
Food was buffet and was really poor, i think we went hungry most nights. If you like fried, battered or sugary food then you'll be fine, if you like fresh local produce then forget it. They need to change the chef or get Gordon Ramsay to inspect the kitchen.
No excuse for poor food, just keep it simple and fresh.
Pool was a sunken canvas pool but adequate for cooling off.
Lodge itself is quite tired but adequate.
Service from bar staff was great however reception/gift shop staff were awful, especially stephen. Huge language barrier to begin with and just generally unhelpful and everything seemed hardwork.
Potential for a great lodge if staff are hand chosen for excellence rather than availability.
We stayed three nights and wish it could have been longer. The lodge has a well used feel to it - lie a mature wine. The guides were all exceptional - friendly and well informed and the river trips were like a dream. Everyone did their best to make the stay a a good one and we were sad to leave. It is family friendly and the children we met loved it.The perfect remedy after a strenuous trek in the Maliau basin.
Great people and great food!! We were a family of 3 generations and everyone had a great time. Stayed there for 2 nights wished we could stay longer. We would love to go back again. Thank you so much!
Loved this place and felt really special. You arrive by boat so already felt like an adventure! The rooms are gorgeous and clean. The food was great also with a good choice. I stayed here for 3 days and was a really great experience to be near so much wildlife and have the privilege of spotting Orangutans and other animals in the wild. I would definitely return and recommend to others.
Imagine yourself in the middle of nowhere where everyday is rather special with beautiful smiles and adventures waiting. The new villas were rather nice, although the superior rooms were okay too (I had a peek). The staff made effort to make my stay comfortable, and I learned lots from them about Kinabatangan floodplains.
Many travelers visit Borneo to experience the nature and wildlife, and it's hard to imagine a better place than Sukau Rainforest Lodge to serve as your base if that is your goal. The lodge itself is comfortable and friendly, with a staff that works hard to please. Meals are excellent and facilities are clean and updated. The daily boat excursions are the key to the experience, however. All along the Kinabatangan River, the forest teems with wildlife, which the guides are skilled at finding and then describing with knowledge and passion. We saw orangutan, pygmy elephants, 6 species of hornbill, proboscis monkeys and on and on. We even had a visit from a mother/child orangutan pair at the boardwalk just behind the lodge, 1 minute from our room! There are places along the river where the vast palm plantations are visible, and it's sad to know how much forest has already been lost to this development. But that makes this area and its diversity that much more precious and special, and we hope to visit again.
Spent 2nts here and thoroughly enjoyed it. Set on the river the only access is by boat. Loved how the resort is built with minimal impact to the environment. Service was excellent, food yum and the guides were very informative. Rooms were very comfortable and once again in keeping with the environment.
We spent 3 days at this wonderful lodge. Everything was just perfect. The accommodation was lovely and the food was fantastic, lots of choice and really delicious. we didn't really know what to expect with this trip, this was something I had not done before and so had no idea of what to expect. I was truly amazed at the wildlife we saw and really didn't know that I would be so fascinated by the experience. Our guide, Noah, was fantastic, very knowledgeable and gave us lots of information on what we were seeing. We never got back to the lodge on time as he would do his upmost to make sure we saw as much as possible. The staff could not be more helpful, so friendly and positive. Even if you didn't see much wildlife, which we did, I would never tire of the boat trips on the river, just the surroundings and the noises were so interesting. I cannot recommend this trip enough, if I had known how much I would love it I would have stayed here longer, it really was one of the best travel experiences I have had.
This one day trip to Sepilok was a highlight of the holiday. Professionally organised, we were picked up at the airport by our driver/guide who provided lots of information before we got to Sepilok.
Our guide stayed with us through the entire trip, ensuring we got good views of the Orangutans and Sun Bears.
Highly recommend using Borneo Eco Tours.
I'm writing this under 'day tours' as there doesn't seem to be an option for longer tours.
Anyway we booked a 3 day/2 night tour via Borneo Eco Tours and stayed at the Sukau Rainforest Lodge (reviewed separately) and were very impressed.
Our guide (Nextor) was very knowledgeable with excellent English and how they spot the animals hidden away is I'll never know.
The minibus was waiting for us at 8:00am on day 1 as promised, and the tour throughout was well organised and well scheduled.
The river safaris and transfers were great and we took the option of the night safari from the Lodge (65 Ringgit pp) which was very well worthwhile.
We are planning a return visit to climb mount Kinabalu and will certainly be talking to them. I have no hesitation in recommending them.
Just back from two weeks in Sabah, with all but flights in and out organised by Borneo Eco Tours. Organisation was thoughtful and carried through for the whole tour with no problems whatsoever. Guides were great - knowledgeable people and just great company. Although we did not book a personal tour, the spread of activities meant that in most cases we were in very small groups with just one or two other couples/families and in some cases just us. Tour comprised time at Sepilok, Sukau, Kawag Danum and the two day Kinabalu trip. Accommodation good to excellent. Kawag Danum is still in its early days and is more spartan than other places (no bar or pool for instance) and is in a patch of of forest that was partly logged, but still a great place to observe Bornean fauna. Sukau very comfortable (we had a villa unit - v highly recommended!) but currently expanding, so it was a partial building site while we were there. Also the rainforest patch it sits in is very limited and consequently self-guided walking/discovery (which I prefer) is also limited. Would not hesitate to go back with BET.
We did a day tour to Mt Kinabalu with Borneo Eco Tours in June. I found the initial correspondence with the company prompt and friendly. Our minibus turned up at our accommodation right on time and out jumped Loren with a huge smile and friendly greeting. As we travelled to Mt Kinabalu Park we picked up other tour participants and chatted to everyone. We discovered that we had another guide with us sitting in the front - Adrian. Well, we were in for a treat. Adrian has been with the company, something like 18 years and is their senior guide. He was so interesting to talk with and gave us a history talk about Malaysia in general and about the different indigenous tribes. We had a short stop at a market before we arrived at the Mt Kinabalu Park World Heritage Site. On our walk we had excellent explainations of both flora and fauna. Adrian was so accommodating with our questions and was so knowledgable and passionate about the environment we were exploring. We had lunch at a local restaurant - a buffet, which allowed us to try a range of Malaysian dishes. Then we visited a small museum before heading back to Kota Kinabalu. I'm so pleased that we took this tour. Thank you both Adrian and Loren for your excellent guiding services - I cannot recommend them highly enough. Your tour was one of the highlights of our two week trip in Malaysia.
Katie and David from New Zealand.
Borneo Eco Tours took us on our trip to Sukau - we paid extra to go by boat transfer which was well worth it as we saw 2 herds of Pygmy elephants totalling about 34 en route. An amazing sight! Jamil and Noah were excellent tour guides during our stay at Sukau.Thank you both for giving out family some wonderful tours on the Kinabatangan river!
Via internet we had pre-arranged our excursions in Sabah. Communicatie via email went very well and full information and advise was given by Cindy. Unfortunately we had to change our travel plans and only were able to visit Kota Kinabalu area. The daytrips were well organised and with good drivers and guides. Timing excellent. Only negative is that the daytrip to Gaya island and snorkeling tour are not very interesting. The islands are very crowded with Asian tourists. Snorkeling is almost impossible because of the many, many (!) people in the water. The next trip took us to Gunung Kinabalu, which is beautifull in itself. We were lucky to see the mountain in full glory. Only the hiking we did was very limited and not worth the long drive (2hours). We had nice days but can not recommend these two tours to anyone. Snorkeling and jungle tours are much better and les crowded elsewere in Malaysia and Borneo. Also gunung Kinabalu is more interesting If you are planning to climb and explore the area more extensively than we did during this tour. The agency itself is highly recommended!
Netherlands, Aug 2017
I am very happy with my booked arrangement with Borneo Eco Tours and I can gladly recommend future travellers to contact them. They are very serious, knowledgeable of the fantastic nature and attractions in the area of Sabah.
The tour 4d/3n Sabah Wildlife exceeded all my expectations! We were lucky and had 4 encounters with wild Orangu tans and it was an unforgettable experience! The guide Lee was excellent and did a great job. Everything was well organized and Sukau Rainforest Lodge is a beautiful place in the "jungle". Good service.
I also attended a tour ex Kota Kinabalu called Kinabalu Park Botanique with the guide Melvin and this was also a very nice tour that I am happy with and can recommend.
We had a great day visiting Sandakan (Sepilok, War Memorial Park, Rainforest Centre) with our outstanding guide Nextor. All logistics were well organised, and we were kept entertained and informed by Nextor throughout the tour, as he pointed out all sorts of interesting sights, and explained animals, habitat and cultural practices. His assistance with photographing wildlife was particularly appreciated. My teenage nephews enjoyed his commentary immensely and had a wonderful experience of wild Sabah. I would definitely book with Borneo Eco Tours again- the only issue was a delay with replies to emails when booking from Australia, but it was all sorted out with no issue. I would definitely book with this company again.
We had a fabulous stay at Sukau Rainforest Lodge, a boat ride away from Sandakan in Borneo. We took the 3 day/2 night Kinabatangan Wildlife Safari tour which included multiple boat excursions along the river to spot wildlife including proboscis monkeys, macaques, several kinds of hornbill, two kinds of kingfishers, oriental darters, a baby crocodile, a pygmy squirrel, and on the very last day a wild orang utan and her baby. It was wonderful. We also paid a visit to the Sepilok Orang Utan Reserve where we saw orang utans up close, as well as the Sun Bear preserve where the tiny bears were resting and rummaging in the forest. I highly recommend the tour and Rahman, our guide, has the eyes of an eagle and is full of local knowledge about the area and about the wildlife. Great trip!

Unfortunately we are back home again :(
We would like to thank you and the whole team of Borneo Eco Tours for the perfect organisation of our travel. Be sure, we had a wonderful time!
A big Terima Kasih to Osman (great guide) and Patrick (perfect and reliable driver) and the whole crew of Sukau Rainforest Lodge, who also did a great job.
We will highly recommend you as THE tour operator for tips to Borneo. Today I wrote a review on TripAdvisor. You might find it under my alias "callaxxx". To (maybe) attract more German guests, I wrote it in German language.
Alle the best to you and kind regards, Barbara

I just wanted to say a huge thanks to you for looking after me so well last weekend. We both had an amazing time. My wife will do a proper TripAdvisor review when we have time. But on a personal level I wanted to show my gratitude. The food was amazing and it made me so happy to enjoy foods I don't normally get to. The restaurant staff were all amazing.

Just to let you know that we have spent the most amazing week. The hotels/lodges were of very good standing, and the sceneries were breathtaking. Special mention to Lankayan Island (which does not belong to your organisation I know :) but what an amazing island!!)
Thank you, we have nothing to complain. Regards.

Sorry for the delayed response-- we have been traveling in Southeast Asia with limited email access. Zack and I would like to properly thank you and Hamit for an amazing trip to Danum Valley! We had such a wonderful time in the rainforest, and it certainly is one of my favorite and most treasured memories from this trip. Thank you again for arranging everything and making it happen.
I hope that our paths will cross again in the near future, and hope that we make it back to Borneo soon.

The whole tour was fantastic. We saw the Borneo big five in one day and had some outstanding guides throughout our holiday. The whole thing was seamless and the local people were so friendly too. The hotel/lodge accomodation was all of a good standard and we also enjoyed staying with a local family for night.
Our highlights . seeing the bats leving the caves at Mulu, sightings of six wild orangutans, watching a green turtle lay her eggs on turtle island and snorkelling with turtles off Sipidan island.
We were really impressed with Borneo Eco Tours and would have no hestitation in recommendng the company to other travellers.
Thanks for everything

When it comes to touring, we are usually DIY'ers. You and your company have changed the way we think. We are reborn tourists and looking for more. The set of tours you presented were perfect for us and unforgettable.

Cindy I'm hopeless with putting reviews on TripAdvisor so I'm emailing you . Our two day tour to Sukau Eco Lodge was amazing even though the first day we had torrential rain all day , the evening boat tour was cancelled, the next day the rain started to dissipate. The lodge is perfectly situated in the jungle . The staff were informative and friendly and we loved the communal tables for eating . We would love to bring friends back sometime but this time for the 5 day tour . Thank you for everything Cindy I'm hopeless with putting reviews on TripAdvisor so I'm emailing you . I just wanted to say what a wonderful time we all had. The lodge was excellent and every member of staff was helpful and friendly. It certainly exceeded all expectations. At Sukau rainforest Lodge (reviewed separately) we saw Pygmy Elephants, Sun Bears, Orangutans, Proboscis Monkeys, and one river Crocodile. The tour package we took included the Sea Turtle hatchery at the one of the sanctuary islands (Pulau Selingan). Snorkeling there was ok but not great... Also saw several giant Monitor Lizards on Selingan! For the whole tour, our guide Nextor was very well informed and funny
A superb trip from start to finish. Everything was extremely well organised and professional. Just loved it. Sukau Lodge is a truly special place and I would return again in a heartbeat!
I took one-day tour to Mt. KINABALU.
I think this place is must to go, in the nice air in the forest, can see many kinds of plant, flowers and birds. I luckily saw Rafflesia there.?
My guide Osman is experienced and knowledgeable, so it was really wonderful to hear his knowledge about the nature, I could not have such a nice experience without him.
I have compiled a trip report from our lovely Sabah trip earlier this year and you can post it on your website if you like. Please send our warmest regards to Maldin and Ron as well as I do not have their e-mails.
Hazwan - many thanks again for excellent guidning and company and for us the pictures aids in recalling many of the fine moments we shared in your fantastic nature.
Take care, Klas

My boyfriend and I went on the 3day/2nights jungle tour and stayed at Sukau Rainforest Lodge and it was absolutely perfect! Everything was organized in the best possible way so we just had to sit back and enjoy! We were picked up at Sandakan airport in the morning, went to the orang utan Sepilok sanctuary where we had a bit of downtime before they opened and then went around the sanctuary with our great guide Fernando. Afterwards he took us to the sun bear conservatory and after lunch his colleague Hamit took over and we went by speed boat to the lodge. The journey took us about an hour because we stopped a lot of times to watch the wildlife. We saw the big five already all on our way to the lodge! Absolutely breathtaking! The speed boat ride was easy and comfortable! The lodge itself is absolutely wonderful! The rooms are spacious, everything's clean, there's a dip pool and the staff is wonderful! We had three more cruises and on each we saw a lot of monkeys, different birds, orang utans again (!), I was amazed what and where Hamit spotted all the animals! On the way back we saw crocodiles again and after lunch in Sandakan we were dropped off at the airport to catch our flight.
The communication prior to the tour was friendly and fast. Honestly, if you're interested in Borneo and its wildlife, go with BET.
I worked with Kyra in customer service to put together a custom 8-day package to Sabah that included Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Island, Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley, the Kinabatangan River, and the Orangutan sanctuary. Kyra was prompt and courteous and the price was among the most reasonable of the several quotes I got. The actual trip was flawless and was exactly what was advertised, no surprise fees or anything like that. The complicated arrangement of pickups and transfers were always on time and in comfortable vehicles. The tourguides were knowledgeable and spoke good English. Great job!
Can not say enough good things about this tour operator. I was picked up at the airport in Sandakan first thing in the morning along with a few other tourists. We proceeded to our first part of the tour with detailed information being given at all times. Eventually the rest of the group went on to an overnight stay after which I was given my own private guide to take me the rest of the way. We discussed my late return flight to KK, and decided on a personalized afternoon of touring. Needless to say the guide/driver was tipped very well. Excellent service from a friendly and professional group!
